Hackmatack Playhouse Summer 2019 Season
Kicking off the Hackmatack season is Always…Patsy Cline, running from June 14th-29th. This unique two-person musical that tells the story of the beloved country singer’s friendship with avid fan Louise Seger. Told from Seger’s perspective after learning of Cline’s tragic death in a plane crash in 1963, Patsy Cline is a commemorative story filled with nostalgia, humor, and tragedy that pays tribute to Cline’s short but successful career. According to American Theatre Magazine, it has become one of the most produced musicals in America. Whether you’ve never heard of Patsy Cline, or fell in love with her music back when she graced the stage decades ago, you will be pleased to hear and relive some of her famous hits such as “Crazy”, “I Fall To Pieces”, and “Walkin’ After Midnight”!
Next comes The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, running from July 3rd-20th. This touching piece is based off of Mark Haddon’s novel and tells the story of Christopher Boone- a young boy and gifted mathematician on the autism spectrum who investigates the mysterious death of his neighbor’s dog Wellington. Against the orders of those around him, Christopher seeks to discover who killed Wellington, and ultimately learns more about himself and his own past than he could have ever imagined. This thought-provoking drama is sure to captivate audiences, and was the recipient of six Drama Desk Awards, five Outer Critics Circle Awards, and five Tony Awards including Best Play.
A beloved show that our audiences have been wanting us to do for years, the jukebox musical Mamma Mia! will be running from July 24-August 10th, and features the catchy tunes of Swedish pop group ABBA. From July 24th-August 10th, audiences will journey to the Greek island of Kalokairi, where young bride-to-be Sophie wants her father to walk her down the aisle. There’s just one problem: she doesn’t know who her father is! After reading her mother Donna’s diary, Sophie discovers the names of three possible fathers, and invites all of them to the island for the wedding. When Donna finds out that her past suitors have made a reappearance, secrets and surprises emerge. This heartwarming story of love and the importance of family was nominated for five Tony Awards, received a Touring Broadway Award for Best Musical Score, and will leave you bopping along to hits such as “Dancing Queen”, “Take a Chance on Me”, “Knowing Me, Knowing You”, and “SOS”!
Concluding the season will be Peter and the Starcatcher, running from August 14th-29th. Based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, this play tells of the origins of Peter Pan- the Boy Who Would Not Grow Up. While traveling aboard The Neverland, Peter (then known only as “the Boy”), meets Molly- a young, feisty “starcatcher-in-training”. The girl reveals a deep secret: within the ship lies a trunk of “starstuff”- a powerful dust from beyond this world. Desperately seeking the starstuff is a band of cruel pirates led by the infamous Black Stache. What was once a simple voyage quickly turns into an adventure that spans both land and sea as the Boy, with the help of his fellow shipmates and Molly, embarks on a quest to ensure that the starstuff does not fall into the wrong hands. Come experience this fantasy tale of the joy and energy of youth which won five Tony Awards and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music in a Play!
